Before Your Appointment: What to Bring

Preparation makes your first visit smoother and more productive. Here's what to bring to your first chiropractic appointment at our Yakima clinic:

Insurance card (if you have coverage)

List of current medications

Relevant medical records — X-rays, MRI results, previous diagnoses

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to your back and neck

A list of your symptoms — when they started, what makes them better or worse

Step 1: The Consultation

Your first visit begins with a thorough consultation. Your chiropractor will spend time getting to know you — your health history, your current symptoms, your lifestyle, and your goals. This is your chance to describe everything you've been experiencing and ask any questions you have.

Expect questions like: When did the pain start? What does it feel like? Does it radiate or stay in one spot? What activities make it worse? Have you had this problem before? Have you tried any other treatments?

Step 2: The Physical Evaluation

After the consultation, your chiropractor will perform a comprehensive physical examination. This typically includes:

Postural Assessment

Evaluating how you stand, any spinal curvature abnormalities, shoulder height differences, and overall alignment from front, back, and side.

Range of Motion Testing

Measuring how far you can bend, twist, and flex in various directions — identifying restrictions that indicate joint or disc problems.

Palpation

Feeling the spine and surrounding muscles to identify misaligned vertebrae, muscle tension, trigger points, and areas of tenderness.

Neurological Testing

Checking reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength to identify any nerve involvement — important for conditions like sciatica or disc herniation.

Step 3: Your Treatment Plan

Once your evaluation is complete, your chiropractor will explain the diagnosis in plain language — no medical jargon. You'll learn exactly what is causing your pain and what your treatment plan looks like, including:

  • The specific techniques that will be used for your condition

  • How many visits are recommended and the expected timeline

  • What milestones to expect along the way

  • Home exercises or lifestyle recommendations to support your recovery

Step 4: Your First Adjustment

In most cases, treatment begins at the first visit. Your chiropractor will perform spinal adjustments — precise, controlled movements applied to specific vertebrae to restore normal alignment and motion.

You may hear a "popping" sound during an adjustment. This is simply gas being released from the joint as it moves — completely normal and harmless. Most patients find the adjustments feel satisfying rather than painful.

Many patients feel immediate relief after their first adjustment. Some experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours afterward — similar to muscle soreness after exercise. This is normal and part of your body adapting to improved alignment.
